The word in which Alwoodley is thought to come from has a Middle Age meaning for “woodland clearing”. This also seems to be relevant in the modern day with the more urban areas of Moor Allerton and Moortown to the south of the area with the landscape becoming more rural as you travel north through Alwoodley towards Eccup Reservoir.

Bus – There are regular bus services that run through Alwoodley into Leeds city centre and also a nearby route that provides links to Harrogate and Ripon.

Rail – Alwoodley lies just to the north of the Wharfedale Line with stations at Horsforth, Headingley and Burley Park providing links to Harrogate & York. Leeds train station is also similar distance which provides links to the national service.

Air – Alwoodley is located an easy 15-20 minute drive to Leeds Bradford Airport. The nearby Leeds train station also provides good links to Manchester Airport.

Within Alwoodley is the largest area of water in West Yorkshire – Eccup Reservoir. The reservoir was first constructed in 1843 and expanded further at a later date making its open water area 91 hectares. The reservoir and the surrounding woodland a sites of Special Scientific Interest and have proven popular for local wildlife with a growing population of red kites taking up residence.

In the Alwoodley area there are also a number of golf clubs including Alwoodley, Moortown and Sandmoor. Moortown Golf Club famously hosted the 1929 Ryder Cup in which Great Britain defeated USA.
